Heavy maintenance takes place approximately every 6 to 10 years. It is an inspection that consists more or less of dismantling the entire aircraft for inspection and overhaul.
Even the paint may have to be completely removed for a complete inspection of the fuselage metal skin.
Such an inspection can generally take up to 50,000 hours of work and 2 months depending on the number of technicians involved.
